    Introduction

    We Do Recover ("the App") is a personal recovery support web application operated by Kidell Powell. The App provides tools for tracking recovery milestones, journaling, gratitude practice, mood check-ins, safety planning, urge tracking, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) challenges, wellness exercises, coping skills building, accountability partner connections, community encouragement, and AI-powered support through Mona, our recovery companion chatbot.

    This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data. We take the privacy of your recovery journey seriously and are committed to protecting your personal information.

    Information We Collect

    Account Information

    When you create an account, we collect:

    • Your name
    • Email address
    • If you sign in with Google: your Google account profile information (name and email)

    Recovery Data

    As you use the App, you may provide:

    • Sobriety date — used to calculate your time in recovery and milestones
    • Daily mood check-ins — mood selection, feelings wheel emotions, HALT assessment (Hungry/Angry/Lonely/Tired), optional notes, and date
    • Gratitude entries — lists of up to 5 items per entry
    • Journal entries — titles, content, and mood selections
    • Safety plan — warning signs, coping strategies, support contacts, and crisis resources you define
    • Urge tracking — urge triggers, intensity levels, coping strategies used, and outcomes
    • Coping toolbox — your selected coping skills organized by category and favorites

    Challenges Hub & Gamification Data

    When you use the Challenges Hub (CBT games), we store:

    • Game session results — game played, score, XP earned, and session details
    • Gamification profile — total XP, current level, level name, and earned badges

    AI-Powered Features (Mona & The Reframe Room)

    The App uses Anthropic's Claude AI in two features. When you use either, data is sent to our AI service provider via a Cloudflare Worker proxy:

    • Mona chat — Your chat messages within the current session and recovery context (time in recovery, recent mood check-ins, latest milestone) sent with your first message to personalize responses
    • The Reframe Room (Challenges Hub) — The thought you submit for analysis and your self-reported distress level

    Mona chat conversations are not stored on our servers. They exist only in your browser session and are cleared when you close or refresh the page. Reframe Room results are saved to your game session history.

    Accountability Partner Data

    When you use the Connect feature to find an accountability partner:

    • Partner requests — Your display name and request status are visible to the other user
    • Direct messages — Messages you send to your partner are stored and visible to both you and your partner in real time
    • Notifications — The App generates notifications for partner requests and messages

    Community Wall Posts

    Posts to the Community Wall are anonymous. We store only the message text (up to 280 characters), a mood emoji, and a timestamp. Your identity is not linked to your posts.

    Usage Data

    We use Google Analytics to collect anonymous usage information such as pages visited, session duration, and general device/browser information. This helps us improve the App.

    How We Use Your Information

    • Personalization — Display your recovery milestones, streaks, mood history, and gamification progress (XP, levels, badges)
    • AI Support — Provide context-aware responses from Mona and AI-powered CBT analysis in The Reframe Room based on your recovery progress
    • Data Storage — Save your gratitude entries, journal entries, check-ins, safety plan, urge logs, coping toolbox, and game sessions so they persist across sessions
    • Sharing — Generate shareable links for gratitude lists when you choose to share
    • Partner Connections — Facilitate accountability partner requests and real-time direct messaging between matched partners
    • Notifications — Deliver in-app notifications for partner requests and messages
    • Analytics — Understand how the App is used to improve features and performance
    • Security — Prevent bot abuse using reCAPTCHA during account creation

    Third-Party Services

    The App uses the following third-party services that may process your data:

    Each service operates under its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review them:

    AI-Powered Features Disclosure

    The App uses Anthropic's Claude AI in two features. All AI requests are routed through our Cloudflare Worker proxy.

    Mona Chat

    • Your messages and recovery context are sent to Anthropic's API
    • Conversations are session-only and are not persisted on any server
    • Mona is not a medical professional, therapist, or sponsor — responses are for support and encouragement only

    The Reframe Room (Challenges Hub)

    • When you submit a thought for analysis, the thought text and your distress level are sent to Anthropic's API
    • The AI returns a CBT analysis identifying cognitive distortions and suggesting reframes
    • Analysis results are saved to your game session history in Firestore

    Anthropic may process data sent to their API according to their privacy policy. AI-generated content is not reviewed by a human and should not be interpreted as professional clinical advice.

    Data Sharing and Exposure

    We do not sell your personal information. Your data may be shared in the following limited ways:

    • Gratitude Sharing — When you choose to share a gratitude entry, a link is generated that anyone with the URL can view. Shared entries include your gratitude items and the date, but not your name or email.
    • Community Wall — Posts are visible to all users but are anonymous and not linked to your account.
    • Accountability Partners — When you connect with an accountability partner, your display name is visible to them. Direct messages you send are visible to both you and your partner. Partner requests show your display name to the recipient.
    • Third-Party Processing — Data is processed by the services listed above for the stated purposes only.

    Data Storage and Security

    • Your data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore, protected by Firebase security rules that restrict access to authenticated users and their own data
    • All data is transmitted over HTTPS (encrypted in transit)
    • Passwords are handled by Firebase Authentication and are never stored in plain text
    • We do not have access to your Google sign-in credentials

    Your Rights

    For All Users

    You have the right to:

    • Access the personal data we hold about you
    • Request deletion of your account and associated data
    • Stop using the App at any time

    For EU/EEA Users (GDPR)

    Under the General Data Protection Regulation, you additionally have the right to:

    • Data portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
    • Rectification — correct inaccurate personal data
    • Restriction of processing — limit how your data is used
    • Object to processing — opt out of certain data uses
    • Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

    For California Residents (CCPA)

    Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, you have the right to:

    • Know what personal information is collected and how it is used
    • Request deletion of your personal information
    • Opt out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell your data)
    • Non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

    Data Retention

    • Account data — Retained as long as your account is active. Deleted upon request.
    • Recovery data (journal, gratitude, check-ins, safety plan, urge logs, coping toolbox) — Retained as long as your account is active.
    • Game session & gamification data (scores, XP, levels, badges) — Retained as long as your account is active.
    • Mona chat conversations — Not persisted. Exist only in your browser session.
    • Partner messages & requests — Retained as long as both partner accounts are active.
    • Notifications — Retained as long as your account is active.
    • Community wall posts — Retained indefinitely as they are anonymous.
    • Analytics data — Retained per Google Analytics' standard retention policies.

    Children's Privacy

    The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.

    Changes to This Policy

    We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.

    Acceptance of Terms

    By accessing or using We Do Recover ("the App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use the App. Your continued use of the App constitutes acceptance of any updates to these terms.

    Description of Service

    We Do Recover is a free, web-based recovery support application that provides:

    • Recovery milestone and sobriety date tracking
    • Daily mood check-ins with feelings wheel and HALT assessment
    • Gratitude list creation and sharing
    • Private journaling
    • Safety plan builder for crisis preparedness
    • Urge tracking with triggers, intensity, and coping strategies
    • Coping toolbox for building personalized coping skills
    • Challenges Hub with 6 interactive CBT games and a gamification system (XP, levels, badges)
    • Wellness Toolkit with guided breathing, grounding, body scan, urge surfing, muscle relaxation, loving-kindness, and safe place visualization exercises
    • ACT exercises (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy techniques)
    • Daily recovery meditations (sourced from NA World Services)
    • AI-powered support chat (Mona) and AI-powered CBT analysis (The Reframe Room)
    • Accountability partner connections with direct messaging
    • Anonymous community encouragement wall
    • Recovery resource links

    Not a Substitute for Professional Help

    This is the most important section of these terms.

    The App, including Mona (AI chat), The Reframe Room (AI-powered CBT analysis), the Challenges Hub (CBT games), the Wellness Toolkit, the Safety Plan builder, and all other features, is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, therapy, counseling, or any form of professional healthcare. The App is intended solely as a supplemental support tool.

    • Mona is an AI chatbot, not a licensed therapist, counselor, sponsor, or medical professional
    • The CBT games, wellness exercises, and safety plan tools are educational and supportive in nature — they do not constitute clinical therapy or treatment
    • Nothing in the App should be interpreted as medical or clinical advice
    • Always seek the guidance of qualified health providers with any questions regarding your health or recovery
    • Never disregard professional advice or delay seeking it because of something you read or received through the App
    • If you are in crisis, call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or 1-800-662-4357 (SAMHSA) immediately

    Account Responsibilities

    When you create an account, you agree to:

    • Provide accurate and complete information
    • Keep your login credentials secure and confidential
    • Be responsible for all activity that occurs under your account
    • Notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account

    You must be at least 13 years of age to create an account and use the App.

    Acceptable Use

    You agree not to use the App to:

    • Post content that is harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, or discriminatory
    • Share content that promotes drug use, self-harm, or illegal activity
    • Impersonate another person or misrepresent your identity
    • Attempt to access other users' accounts or private data
    • Interfere with or disrupt the App's functionality or servers
    • Use the App for any commercial purpose without authorization
    • Exploit the AI chat feature to generate harmful, abusive, or inappropriate content

    We reserve the right to remove content and suspend accounts that violate these terms.

    Community Wall Guidelines

    The Community Wall is a space for anonymous words of hope and encouragement. By posting, you agree to:

    • Share only supportive, positive, and recovery-affirming messages
    • Keep posts under 280 characters
    • Not include personal identifying information about yourself or others
    • Not post phone numbers, email addresses, or links

    Posts are anonymous and cannot be edited or deleted after submission.

    AI-Powered Features Terms

    The App uses Anthropic's Claude AI in two features: Mona (chat) and The Reframe Room (CBT thought analysis). By using either feature, you understand and agree that:

    • Both features are powered by artificial intelligence and may produce inaccurate, incomplete, or inappropriate responses
    • All AI-generated content is produced in real-time and is not reviewed by a human
    • You should not rely on AI features for medical, legal, or emergency advice
    • Data sent to AI features is processed by third-party services (see our Privacy Policy)
    • The Reframe Room's CBT analysis identifies cognitive distortions and suggests reframes for educational purposes only — it is not a clinical assessment
    • We are not liable for any actions taken based on AI-generated responses or analysis

    Accountability Partners & Connect

    When you use the Connect feature to find an accountability partner, you agree to:

    • Communicate respectfully and supportively with your partner at all times
    • Not share harmful, threatening, abusive, or inappropriate content in direct messages
    • Not share your partner's personal information or messages with others without their consent
    • Understand that your display name is visible to your partner and to users you send or receive partner requests from
    • Understand that direct messages are visible to both you and your partner

    Accountability partners are fellow users of the App and are not professional counselors, therapists, or sponsors. We are not responsible for the content of messages exchanged between partners.

    Challenges Hub & Gamification

    The Challenges Hub offers interactive CBT-based games with a shared gamification system. By using these features, you understand that:

    • Game scores, XP, levels, and badges are tracked and stored in your account
    • CBT games are educational and supportive tools — they are not clinical therapy or treatment
    • Game content (scenarios, distortions, reframes) is for learning purposes and may not apply to your specific situation
    • Gamification elements (XP, levels, badges) are designed to encourage engagement and are not indicators of clinical progress

    Gratitude Sharing

    When you share a gratitude entry, a public link is generated. You understand that:

    • Anyone with the link can view the shared gratitude list
    • Shared entries are accessible without authentication
    • You are responsible for who you share the link with
    • Shared entries do not include your name or email, but do include the gratitude items and date

    Intellectual Property

    • The App's design, code, and branding are the property of Kidell Powell
    • Daily meditation content ("Just for Today") is the property of NA World Services, Inc. and is used for personal recovery purposes
    • You retain ownership of any content you create (journal entries, gratitude lists, community posts)
    • By posting to the Community Wall, you grant us a non-exclusive license to display your anonymous post publicly within the App

    Service Availability

    The App is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We do not guarantee that:

    • The App will be available at all times without interruption
    • The App will be free from errors or bugs
    • Data will never be lost (we recommend keeping personal backups of important journal entries)

    We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the App at any time without notice.

    Limitation of Liability

    To the fullest extent permitted by law, Kidell Powell and We Do Recover shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from:

    • Your use of or inability to use the App
    • Any content or advice provided by AI-powered features (Mona chat and The Reframe Room)
    • Any interactions with accountability partners or content exchanged via direct messaging
    • Any outcomes from using CBT games, wellness exercises, or safety plan tools
    • Unauthorized access to your data
    • Loss of data or service interruptions
    • Any actions taken based on information provided through the App

    Indemnification

    You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Kidell Powell and We Do Recover from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the App, violation of these terms, or infringement of any third-party rights.

    Governing Law

    These Terms of Use shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

    Changes to These Terms

    We may update these Terms of Use from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
